Torino Porta Susa

An intimate look at Torino’s modern train station.

The history of Porta Susa Railway Station in Torino (Turin) is closely tied to the evolution of both rail transport in Italy and the city’s development as a major industrial and transport hub.

The original Porta Susa Railway Station was inaugurated in 1866. It was built to facilitate railway connections to the surrounding areas and to other major cities in Italy, as the country was in the process of unification.

A significant renovation of Porta Susa took place from 2006 to 2012. This redevelopment modernized the station, improving functionality, and enhancing the overall experience for travelers.

The new station, built right next to the old (now decommissioned) station, introduced modern architectural elements, including a large glass atrium that improved natural lighting and passenger flow. The updated facilities included new waiting areas, shops, and restaurants, transforming the station into a modern transit hub.

I spent several days in Porta Susa, getting to know its design and flow.  Each day I made photographs with a different lens to record either the grandeur of its design, the intimacy of its rest areas or aspects in between, resulting in the 32 images contained in this book.
