Torino Streets

A photographic look at life in Torino.

Welcome to the streets of Torino.

I’ve lived in Torino since early 2019 and have only explored a small part of the city with my camera.  But these 27 images show a range of what life is like here in and near the city center.

While Torino is a large city—Italy’s 4th largest—it does not have the hustle and bustle of large American cities.  This presents a bit of a challenge for a street photographer, as interesting scenes often happen where there are crowds of people.

As a result, my photographs of Torino focus on smaller moments that to me are more authentic than what crowded streets produce.

Founded in the year 28 BCE, Torino entered the realm of the Royal House of Savoy in the late 1000s and became the seat of House in the 1560s.  As politics changed borders, Torino became the capital of the Region of Piemonte and, eventually, the entire country of Italy.

The capital was moved to Florence in 1865 (and finally Rome in 1870).  In those 300 years of being a seat of power and wealth, Torino flourished.  It became a center of industry, most notably the auto industry with FIAT (Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino).

Like many industrial cities in the US, a lot of that work is now done overseas, but Torino has maintained much of the vitality it had in its heyday.
