I have long made photographs of what most people consider odd things. But it wasn’t until I participated in a photo workshop in Santa Fe that I started calling them photos of “nothing.”
At the workshop (Zen and the Art of Photography, led by Doug Beasley), one of our first assignments was to make photos of nothing. By this, the instructor meant to create an intriguing image that the viewer will have a hard time identifying.
I enjoy making photographs like this. They aren’t as easy as you might think. The practice involves looking at things from unusual perspectives.
You will see in this book that some photos are easier to identify than others. I reveal what the more obvious images are, but will leave you guessing for most of them.
